How It Works

Four simple steps to your booking.

  1. Choose Where You Start

Queenstown and Christchurch day tours both run 12 to 13 hours, most of it on the road. Starting from Lake Tekapo or Twizel buys far more time at the mountain, and flights leave from the park itself.

  2. Decide: Ground, Air or Ice

A day tour gets you to the Hooker Valley or the Tasman Glacier viewpoint. A 25 to 55 minute flight adds a snow landing, and a heli-hike gives you about two hours walking on the Tasman Glacier itself.

  3. Book Early in Your Stay

Mount Cook Village averages around 4,300 mm of rain a year, and flights are called off at short notice. Book near the start of your trip so a weather cancellation still leaves a spare day to rebook.

  4. Dress for the Alps

Snow, wind and strong sun are possible in any season. Bring warm layers, sunglasses, sunscreen and sturdy shoes, and check the operator's weather call the evening before or the morning of your tour.

How the Day Works

What a Mount Cook Day Tour Actually Looks Like

Aoraki/Mount Cook Village sits at the end of State Highway 80, about 330 km from Christchurch and 250 km from Queenstown. A day tour from either city runs 12 to 13 hours, and most of that is on the road. The number that shapes your day is the time at the mountain: about 1.5 to 2.5 hours on the Christchurch tours, about 3 hours from Queenstown, and around 4.5 hours if you start at Lake Tekapo.

  1. Early pickup, long drive in — Christchurch tours leave around 6:30 to 7:20 am and cross the Canterbury Plains to Geraldine or Fairlie for a coffee stop. Queenstown tours take the Kawarau Gorge, Cromwell and the Lindis Pass, with a stop in Omarama. Either way, expect four hours or so before the first view of the Southern Alps.
  2. Lake Tekapo or Lake Pūkaki, first views — Christchurch tours stop at Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd for 15 to 30 minutes. Every route then runs along Lake Pūkaki, where glacial flour turns the water turquoise and, on a clear day, Aoraki/Mount Cook fills the head of the lake. Peter's Lookout on SH80 is the classic photo stop.
  3. Time at the mountain: walk, look or fly — In the national park you usually choose your own way to spend the time. The Hooker Valley Track, fully open again since a new 189 m suspension bridge opened in July 2026, is 10 km return and needs about 3 hours, so it fits the Queenstown and Tekapo tours but not the Christchurch ones. The Tasman Glacier View Track is a 30-minute climb of 300-plus steps to a lookout over Tasman Lake and the glacier.
  4. Or go up: flights and heli-hikes — Scenic flights leave from Mount Cook Airport and Glentanner Park, a short drive down the valley. A 25-minute helicopter flight includes a brief alpine landing; 45 to 55-minute ski-plane and helicopter flights land on the upper Tasman Glacier for 10 to 15 minutes; a heli-hike gives you up to about two hours walking on the ice. All of them depend on the weather, and the final call can come minutes before departure.
  5. The long way home — Tours leave the park mid-afternoon and are back in Christchurch or Queenstown in the evening, 12 to 13 hours after pickup. One-way tours finish in the other city instead, which turns the day into a scenic transfer. If a single day feels too long, a night in Twizel, Lake Tekapo or Mount Cook Village gives you a second morning at the mountain.

Choosing a Tour

The Best Mount Cook Tours, Compared

Road, air or ice: what actually changes is where you start, how long you get at the mountain, and whether you leave the ground.

The best Mount Cook tour for most people is a day tour from the city you are already in, and the one to book depends on where that is. From Christchurch, the NZSI Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo day tour ($134, 4.8 from 639 reviews) covers Lake Tekapo, Lake Pūkaki and a walk to the Tasman Glacier viewpoint in about 13 hours. From Queenstown, the Cheeky Kiwi Mt Cook and Hooker Valley day tour ($157) is built around the Hooker Valley Track. If you are already staying near the mountain, go up: a flight with a snow landing or a heli-hike on the Tasman Glacier is what most visitors remember. Planning a proposal or an anniversary? Our guide to special-occasion flights compares the private landings.

Start with where you are staying

Aoraki/Mount Cook Village sits at the end of State Highway 80, about 250 km from Queenstown and 330 km from Christchurch. That distance decides more about your day than any other choice.

Starting pointTypical tourTime at the mountainWhat it suits
Queenstown12-hour small-group day tour, from $157About 3 hoursWalking the Hooker Valley Track
Christchurch13-hour day tour via Lake Tekapo, from $134About 1.5–2.5 hoursSeeing both lakes and the mountain
Lake TekapoTekapo Shuttle day tour, from $97About 4.5 hoursThe most time in the park for the least money
Mount Cook VillageFlights and heli-hikes, from $217The whole tripSnow landings and walking on the ice

A Queenstown tour runs through the Kawarau Gorge and over the Lindis Pass before reaching Lake Pūkaki. Our Queenstown page compares the return and one-way tours from there, including fly-in day trips that swap about seven hours of driving for two hours in a small plane. If Mount Cook is one stop of several, our guide to day trips from Queenstown compares Milford Sound, Glenorchy and the rest. A Christchurch tour crosses the Canterbury Plains and stops at Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd on the way, which is why it gives less time at the mountain itself. Our Christchurch page sets those tours side by side.

The Hooker Valley question

For many visitors the reason to go is the Hooker Valley Track: 10 km return over three swing bridges to Hooker Lake, with Aoraki/Mount Cook at the head of the valley. It was cut short at the second bridge from April 2025 after the riverbank eroded, and it reopened in full on 28 July 2026 with a new 189 m suspension bridge, the longest in New Zealand. Some tour listings online still describe the closure.

The walk takes about three hours return. That fits comfortably into a Queenstown tour or the Tekapo Shuttle day, but not into a Christchurch tour, where you have closer to an hour and a half to two and a half hours in the park. On those tours the usual walk is the Tasman Glacier View Track, a 30-minute climb of 300-plus steps up the moraine wall to a lookout over Tasman Lake and the glacier. If the full Hooker Valley matters to you, start from Queenstown or Tekapo, or stay a night.

Going up: helicopter, ski plane or heli-hike

Flights leave from Mount Cook Airport and Glentanner Park, a short drive down SH80 from the village. The quickest way to a landing is a 25-minute flight, and the most reviewed of them is the scenic helicopter flight with an alpine landing ($217, 517 reviews), with a brief stop on a mountainside. Alpine landings on the shorter flights may have no snow in the warmer months.

To land on the Tasman Glacier itself, book a longer flight. The ski plane and helicopter glacier combo ($314, 4.7 from 361 reviews) flies one leg in each aircraft and lands on the upper Tasman Glacier for 10 to 15 minutes. The operator, Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters, has flown in the park since 1955 and is the only commercial ski-plane business in the Southern Hemisphere. Our scenic flights page compares ski planes, helicopters and fixed-wing flights, and the helicopter page covers the helicopter-only choice. If you are torn between the two aircraft, our helicopter vs ski plane guide sets every Mount Cook flight side by side, and our glacier helicopter flights comparison weighs Mount Cook against Franz Josef and Fox on the West Coast.

A heli-hike is the only way to walk on the glacier. The Tasman Glacier heli-hike with Mount Cook Glacier Guiding ($569, 4.9 from 329 reviews) takes about three hours, with up to two hours on the ice in crampons and boots the operator supplies. The minimum age is 9. Our heli-hike page compares the operators and the packages that fly you in from Queenstown, and our heli-hiking guide sets the Tasman against Franz Josef and Fox, where you get more time on the ice for less.

Weather is part of the plan

Mount Cook Village averages about 4,300 mm of rain a year, spread over some 150 wet days. Road tours run in most conditions, though the mountain may stay hidden. Flights and heli-hikes are called off when it is unsafe to fly, and the decision can come as late as a few minutes before departure. The operators then offer another date or a full refund, and every GetYourGuide tour on this site can be cancelled for free up to 24 hours before.

The practical rule is to book early in your trip. A flight booked for your first day in the area leaves spare days to rebook if the cloud comes down. Snow, freezing temperatures, wind and strong sun are possible in any season, so pack warm layers and sunglasses even in summer.

What each budget buys

The best-value way into the park among the tours we review is the Tekapo Shuttle day tour at $97, a self-guided day with about four and a half hours for walking. City day tours cost $134 to $157. Flights start at $217 for 25 minutes and run past $500 for longer glacier flights, and heli-hikes start at $569. At the top of the range, a heli-hike day from Queenstown with scenic flights both ways costs $1,170 with True South Flights on Viator, and $692 as a bus and heli-hike combo on GetYourGuide. Our price page lists every tour with what the price includes, along with helicopter ride prices across New Zealand if you are weighing a Mount Cook flight against Queenstown or the West Coast.

Where Viator comes in

Most tours here are booked on GetYourGuide, where the widget and the comparison table above point. For a few trips the stronger listing is on Viator: the Altitude Tours small-group day from Queenstown, True South’s heli-hike from Queenstown, Glenorchy Air’s fly-in day trip and The Helicopter Line’s 55-minute flight over the glaciers. Those are linked to Viator, and each card says so.

The Tasman Lake boat trip run by Glacier Explorers is sold on neither site. It is booked direct with the Hermitage hotel, runs from September to mid-June and costs the operator’s own rate of NZ$219 per adult from 1 October 2026. Our Tasman Glacier page explains how it compares with a flight or a heli-hike.

Combining Mount Cook with Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo sits about an hour and a quarter from the village, and many itineraries pair the two. The Christchurch day tours stop at both, and a two-day tour adds a night of stargazing at Tekapo. Our Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo page covers the combined trip, and the day tours page compares every day tour whatever the starting point.

When you have a date in mind, check availability for the NZSI day tour from Christchurch, or compare the options in the table above.

Hannah Australia

"Great day trip! Unfortunately the weather wasn’t kind to us with low hanging fog for most of the day limiting our views of Mt Cook, although the ice bergs in the River ( after a short hike) were incredibly. Despite that you get an absolute sense of the how spectacular the scenery is. Our guide went out of his way to make the best of the situation with a few extra stops etc. While it sounds like a long day, it definitely doesn’t feel that way and I highly recommend this to anyone"

Jeff Australia
